Online Yoga for Beginners: A Practice Adapted to Your Body and Your Needs .
Have you been thinking about starting yoga, but you’re not quite sure where to begin?
Perhaps you feel that you need to be flexible, sporty or already experienced to practise yoga. Or maybe the idea of walking into a yoga studio feels a little intimidating.
The good news is that yoga does not need to be a performance.
Yoga can simply be a moment to slow down, breathe, move with awareness and reconnect with yourself.
Yoga adapted to the individual
My teaching is inspired by the tradition of T.K.V. Desikachar, who continued the work of his father, T. Krishnamacharya, one of the most influential teachers in modern yoga.
At the heart of this tradition is the understanding that yoga should be adapted to the individual. Every practice can be shaped according to a person’s age, experience, physical abilities, current circumstances and individual needs.
This is the principle at the heart of my teaching:
Yoga adapts to the person, rather than asking the person to adapt to yoga!
Breathing also has an essential role. Movement and breath are coordinated to create a practice that is conscious, progressive and inwardly focused.
Breath, posture and respect for the body
My training also includes the approach of Dr Bernadette de Gasquet, a doctor and yoga teacher particularly recognised for her work around pregnancy, motherhood and pre- and postnatal yoga.
Her approach combines medical knowledge, breathing and physical practice, with particular attention to posture and respect for the body’s natural physiology.
She is also well known for her book Yoga sans dégâts !, which focuses on how to practise yoga safely and avoid injury, with particular attention to posture, breathing and respect for the body.
Her approach has greatly influenced the way I teach. A posture does not need to be forced to be beneficial. It can be adapted, modified and explored with awareness, always respecting the individual and what is appropriate for their body.
This approach is particularly valuable during pregnancy and after childbirth, when the body goes through profound changes and requires specific attention.
Breath at the heart of the practice
In the Desikachar approach, breathing has a fundamental place.
Learning to observe the breath, make it more conscious and coordinate breathing with movement can gradually develop greater presence and inner awareness.
A yoga session may therefore include movement, postures, breathing practices, concentration, relaxation and meditation.
The practice evolves according to the needs of the individual.
Yoga is for everyone
You do not need to be flexible or sporty to start yoga!
You do not need to perform complicated postures!
You can begin exactly where you are.
A practice can be adapted to your body, your age, your energy levels and your needs at that particular moment.
There is no single “perfect” way to perform a posture.
There is a way of practising that can be adapted to your body.
Why practise yoga at home?
For some people, practising at home feels much more comfortable.
There is no need to drive, look for parking or travel somewhere after a long day.
All you need is a small space at home, a yoga mat and a little time for yourself.
Online classes can also help you establish a regular practice while allowing you to practise in familiar and comfortable surroundings.
A gentle way to begin
When you are new to yoga, there is no need to start with an intense practice.
A session may include simple movements, adapted postures, breathing exercises and time for relaxation or meditation.
Gradually, you learn to become more familiar with your body, observe your breathing and develop greater awareness in your practice.
Yoga then becomes less about performance and more about creating a space for yourself.
What if you’re not flexible?
You do not need to be flexible to start yoga!
Flexibility may develop with regular practice, but it is not the main goal.
What matters most is respecting your body and practising in a way that feels appropriate for you today.
Yoga is not a competition: it is an invitation to listen, breathe and fully inhabit your body.
